How Thick Is a Highway Guardrail?

The thickness of a standard highway guardrail varies by regional traffic safety standards, road grade, and crash containment levels. According to AASHTO M180, the official specification for American highway metal beam guardrails, and EN 1317, the unified European road restraint system standard, there are fixed nominal thickness values for mainstream W-beam and thrie-beam guardrails used on global highways.
For conventional two-wave W-beam highway guardrails, AASHTO M180 defines two core thickness grades widely adopted in international road projects. The Class A standard base metal thickness is 2.67 mm (0.105 inch), which is the most common specification for ordinary provincial and municipal highways. The upgraded Class B thickness reaches 3.43 mm (0.135 inch), specially designed for high-speed highways, mountain roads, and heavy-traffic sections to enhance crash resistance and structural stability.
According to European EN 1317-2 test and certification data, highway guardrails applied in EU member states and most Middle Eastern and African countries maintain a standard thickness range of 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm. Thrie-beam guardrails, used for high-grade highways and bridge sections, usually adopt a thickness of 3.0 mm to 3.5 mm to meet higher containment level requirements of N2, H1, and H2.
In addition to the steel base thickness, the hot-dip galvanized coating thickness is also a key standardized parameter. Industry data from international traffic safety research institutions shows that the minimum galvanized coating thickness for export-grade highway guardrails is 80 μm (550 g/㎡), while coastal and high-corrosion areas require a coating thickness of 100 μm to 120 μm to ensure 15–20 years of service life. Unified standard thickness and galvanizing parameters ensure consistent crash performance, weather resistance, and safety compliance across global highway construction projects.
